The Pop, The Myths, and The Truth
Ever wondered about that satisfying "pop" during your chiropractic adjustment? You're not alone! This is one of the most common questions we get at Balanced Chiropractic + Wellness in Windsor. From those that are afraid of hearing the noise to those that are wanting to hear it! Let's break down what's really happening when you hear that sound.
What Causes The Pop?
That cracking sound isn't actually your bones! It's called cavitation - a natural process that occurs when we create space in your joints. Think of it like this: your joints contain a small amount of gas (mostly nitrogen) dissolved in the fluid that helps lubricate them. When we perform an adjustment, we create a small space within the joint, causing that gas to be released - creating the popping sound.
Common Myths About Adjustment Sounds:
The louder the pop, the better the adjustment (Not true!)
You're cracking bones (Nope!)
No sound means no results (Also false!)
The same joint can be adjusted repeatedly (It needs time between adjustments)
The Truth About Adjustment Sounds
Some adjustments make noise, others don't - and both can be equally effective. The sound itself isn't what makes the adjustment work. What matters is restoring proper joint movement and function.
Different Types of Adjustment Sounds:
The classic "pop" from traditional adjustments
Soft clicks from instrument adjustments
Sometimes no sound at all!
Is It Safe?
Absolutely! That popping sound might seem dramatic, but it's completely natural and safe. It's similar to when you "crack" your knuckles - just controlled and precise when done by a professional. It is also something that if you are not comfortable with hearing those noise we can offer instrument adjusting within our office. We want to keep you comfortable during the adjustment to get you the results you’re hoping for.
What If There's No Sound?
Don't worry! Some of our most effective adjustments make no sound at all. Remember, we're focused on improving joint function, not creating sound effects. Even though many will ask for the Tik Tok worthy noises with each adjustment sometimes that’s just not what the body is expressing.
